News from the School Reform Initiative – June 6, 2018

Summer is right around the corner, but for some it feels like it has already started! What is your plan for relaxing and rejuvenating? We also know you will be continuing your learning through workshops, seminars, and professional reading. Share your summer plans in the SRI Facebook group – we want to know what you’re learning this summer!

SRI Affiliates Working All Over the Country

This summer, SRI affiliates are offering workshops, seminars and institutes all over the country. There are still some events with space, but things are filling up quickly. Take a look at the SRI Events page to learn more. Don’t see a date that works for you? Email Kari (kari@schoolreforminitiative.org) and we will work with you to find a session or to create a session to meet your needs.

Speaking Up for Equity Takes Courage

Jeanie Phillips, SRI affiliate, is the co-author of an article geared towards school librarians, but a great read for everyone, that takes on the topic of how school libraries can be equity hubs that support students, staff and communities. In the article, she links ESSA standards along with AASL standards that support developing a more intentional equity focus. You can read the entire article here, then connect with Jeanie on Twitter @JPhillipsVT to chat more!

Eagle Rock Presentations of Learning

Our partners at Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center are inviting people to be a part of the next round of student Presentations of Learning. At the end of each trimester, every student prepares a presentation that displays evidence of their learning both academically and personally during the trimester. The presentations are made before members of the Eagle Rock community and a panel composed of guests. If you are interested in alternative assessment, personalized education or Eagle Rock School, this is a great opportunity to learn more and be on a panel.

Because of the scheduling involved, please RSVP online by July 5, 2018.

Additionally, Eagle Rock can provide overnight accommodations and meals, with prior reservations made when you RSVP.

This is a great opportunity to learn more and experience a truly amazing school. Have questions? Please email Anastacia Galloway Reed agalloway@eaglerockschool.org.

SRI Tools Highlighted in Project Based Learning Blog

Ryan Sprott, a national faculty member for Buck Institute for Education, recently shared a blog post titled Traveling to Explore Complexities of PBL Topics. Ryan gives a shout-out to SRI as a place to find great tools and protocols that support PBL work. Additionally, Ryan is a faculty member at International School of the Americas (ISA), one of the pre-conference site visits for the 2018 Fall Meeting in San Antonio. You can check out the article here, and then sign-up to visit ISA during the Fall Meeting Pre-Conferences!
