Resources for Summer Learning

There are many great places to find free resources to continue your learning. Here are a couple of highlights.

Pursuing Social and Emotional Development: A Call to Action
This resource from the Aspen Institute is a great read and closely aligns with the way SRI has been thinking about the equity part of our mission. “Equity is not just about resources. Equity must also be about affirming student identity regardless of culture, nationality, race, language, or income.”  This report focuses on the connection between equity and social, emotional, and academic development and the need to talk about race.

Teaching Tolerance – Teaching Hard History
This is a series of podcasts and tools produced by Teaching Tolerance that provide a framework or teaching about American slavery. The tools include the podcast, as well as links to primary source texts, teaching tools, and more.

Racial Equity Tools
This website is designed to support individuals and groups working to achieve racial equity. The site offers tools, research, tips, curricula and ideas for people who want to increase their own understanding and to help those working toward justice at every level – in systems, organizations, communities and the culture at large. You can also subscribe to their email list to receive resource updates and link to current news articles and more.

Do you have tools and resources that you find helpful? Please share them with the SRI community via Facebook, Twitter, or send to Chris Jones (chris@schoolreforminitiative.org).

New Book from COSEBOC Founder Ron Walker

Our good friend Ron Walker recently released a new book titled Solomon’s Plan: A Gift of Education from a Father to His Son. Solomon Walker’s formal education started and ended the day he walked miles to the nearest school and was turned away at the door. As an adult, Solomon made sure that his children would have the education that he was denied. Solomon’s son, Ron, went on to become a teacher, principal, and award-winning educator – and is the founder and Executive Director of COSEBOC.

Th book is written for upper elementary and middle school students, but the message is great for any reader! You can purchase your own copy here.

Pictures and Updates of Summer Learning

Thanks to SRI affiliate Gena Merliss for sharing pictures of her recently completed 5-day session on Leading Reflective Practices Groups at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY. We love seeing pictures of participants engaged in SRI work and hearing about the great learning happening around the country. Have pictures or stories to share?
