News from the School Reform Initiative – April 17, 2018

We Have Stories to Tell and They Matter!

To help us tell and share our stories, reflections, insights and experiences, SRI recently formed an Editorial Board of volunteer SRI affiliates.  The board is in place and ready to work – now we need your stories.

  • Have you been challenged by engaging in discussion about race and equity?
  • Have you tried a strategy that didn’t quite work and had to change course?
  • Have you had an “aha” moment that led you to rethink how you approach a task or group?
  • Have you figured out how to introduce provocative readings so they solicit productive exchanges?

If this is you, you are just the person we need.

SRI welcomes submissions of all types using a variety of media including text (narrative, poetry, graphic), video, oral performance, visual art and more.  Submissions may be submitted in English or Spanish and may be translated and published in both languages. Contributions may appear on any of the media platforms that SRI supports including its regularly published news updates, web page, print texts, and on Facebook, Instagram, etc.

If You Think You’re Giving Students of Color a Voice, Get Over Yourself
When working with students of color, it is high time that we move away from salvation narratives that position historically marginalized communities as perpetually in need of saving. In place of this, it is time for us to acknowledge the powerful ways of knowing and being that students of color bring into our classrooms, even when those ways of knowing and being are not valued by traditional school models. Some of the most deeply problematic issues of inequity within the field of education are sustained by well-meaning teachers embracing progressive politics without intentional frameworks of self-reflection to guide their praxis in a healthy direction. In this webinar, participants will wrestle with the dominant narratives that frame our perspectives of marginalized youth, explore how these models are rooted in racist and colonial logic, and leave with tools for shifting from deficit-centered to asset-centered pedagogical approaches in their classrooms.
