Creating the Foundation for Comprehensive School Climate Reform
Promoting Safe, Healthy, Engaged and Democratic K-12 School Communities

The National School Climate Center is pleased to announce our 15th annual Summer Institute from July 10-13th in New York City with a one day (optional) workshop that is focused on students who are learning disabled. The Institute will provide important research-based school climate and instructional guidelines and resources for school teams and individuals to reflect on current practice and develop new plans to promote equitable, healthy and democratically informed schools in general and reduce bully-victim-bystander behavior in particular. Participants will learn about:

A continuous process for measuring and improving school climate that recognizes and supports the whole child and the whole school community.
Recent research and best practices in social, emotional, and civic education and school climate improvement efforts that support effective bully prevention, pro-upstander behavior and academic achievement.
Practical and helpful classroom, school-wide, and school-home-community interventions that support safety, engagement, supportive and respectful relations, and democratically informed communities.
Meet and learn with other building teams, district leaders and State DOE leaders.

Participants will receive readings and organizing questions before the institute, a set of tools at the Institute including the National School Climate Standards, the School Climate Guide for District Policymakers and Education Leaders and the School Climate Implementation Road Map. Participants will also gain access to the School Climate Resource Center (scrc.schoolclimate.org/). Participants will have the opportunity to earn academic credit and/or become a certified as a School Climate Improvement Leader.

The NSCC/CSEE Summer Institute is the best intensive learning experience I am aware of with regard to creating a positive climate for safe, caring, and supportive schools that promote the academic and social-emotional competencies of students. The Summer Institute creates the kind of learning climate for attendees that it teaches you to create in your school settings. You will carry the learning back with you and become part of a network of caring educators and Summer Institute alumni dedicated to putting children first. – —Maurice J.
