We have two events at this year’s meeting that will be open to non Winter Meeting attendees. If you have friends in the Denver area who are interested in learning more about SRI, but can’t attend the entire conference, be sure to share these opportunities:

  • Thursday, January 12th from 7-9pm: Film Screening of “I am not a Racist…am I”. This is a feature documentary following a diverse group of teens through a yearlong exploration to get at the heart of racism. The film producers asked 12 teenagers from New York City to come together for one school year to talk about race and privilege in a series of workshops and in conversations with friends and family. The screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion. This event is open to the public and FREE! Follow this link to learn more about the film. Guests not attending Winter Meeting must RSVP and bring a ticket for entry to the event.
  • Saturday, January 14th from 10:30am-12pm: Our closing keynote speaker is Paul Gorski and he is a nationally renowned and sought after speaker! This keynote address is open to non-Winter Meeting participants for a $25 fee. Click here to read more about Paul and share this information with friends who may not be able to attend all of Winter Meeting, but who are interested in learning more about equity in schools.

How We Can Bridge the Culture Gap

SRI affiliate and Executive Director of SFCESS, Greg Peters, has an article featured in the October issue of the Journal of Staff Development titled How We Can Bridge the Culture Gap: Stages of Change Outline a Path Toward Equity. In this article, Greg shares his experience bringing conversations about equity into schools. Greg outlines four stages of transformation and shares the work he and his colleagues do for developing equity-centered professional learning communities. Learning Forward has graciously made this article available to SRI affiliates who do not subscribe to the journal. Click here to read this article, then join the discussion on Facebook and at Winter Meeting where Greg will be both a participant and one of our opening keynote speakers!

Webinar Opportunity: Creating the Conditions for Protocols in the Classroom

We are currently piloting some new materials that adapt the SRI protocols for youth. The pilot teachers are doing great work and we are learning a lot about what adaptations protocols need when used with students at different age/grade levels.

One question we have heard in this work, and from other classroom teachers who utilize protocols in their classrooms is “How do you create the conditions for the use of protocols, in order for them to be successful when implemented in the classroom?”. We know that the value of the protocol is in the structure it provides based on the purpose, but just simply using a protocol without creating some foundations can lead to challenges and push-back from students.

If you are interested in exploring this question with us, please join us for this webinar. November 17th at 7pm Eastern. We will use a protocol to dive into this question, and will share our learning with the SRI community. This webinar is limited to 20 people – so please register ASAP.  Click here to register.
