On our show today, we speak with the accomplished and award-winning teacher and educational theorist who coined the term “culturally responsive pedagogy” — Gloria Ladson-Billings — who is the Kellner Family Professor of Urban Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She’s been named the 2012 Brock International Prize in Education Laureate for pioneering the adoption of culturally responsive teaching strategies among educators, and she’ll be honored at the 2012 Brock Symposium on Excellence in Education at TU on Thursday of this week (the 29th). That afternoon, at 4:30pm, Ladson-Billings will deliver the keynote address at this symposium — it happens in TU’s Lorton Performance Center, at 550 South Gary Place; her lecture is free and open to the public. Ladson-Billings is the author of “Crossing Over to Canaan: The Journey of New Teachers in Diverse Classrooms,” among other books, and is a member of the National Academy of Education.
